Following e-learning benchmarking, an extensive student survey and an engagement with HEA Enhancement academy the University of Southampton has begun a project to design the “Southampton Learning Environment” (SLE) as a virtual adaptable and innovative environment fit for the next 10 years. Particular issues that this new framework will need to address are integration and opening of data from a range of sources, ID management / authentication, providing a single login and single point of access to a range of information and services and providing an adaptive, personalised and personalizable front end to these services and information. In this project we will develop a prototype of the SLE, which we intend to evolve into the full university system. We will experiment with linked data approaches to opening our data based on ontologies that have already been developed in the School of Electronics and Computer Science. The front end for this rich learning environment will be a widget container and personalizable portal.
