Course Data Stage 2 Blackpool and The Fylde College: XCRI-CAP Implementation
A major reform of the Higher Education sector is currently underway, driven by the white paper ‘Students at the Heart of the System’. One of the key areas of focus within this report is the ability to make course information more widely accessible, and most importantly, comparable. In doing so, course data can be made available in a way which is linked and easily understood by prospective students, their families, schools, careers advisers, employers and any other interested party, either via the HEFCE Key Information Set (KIS) initiative or via course comparison websites and other aggregation services. This project aims to create a digital feed of course data for Blackpool and The Fylde College which is conformant to XCRI-CAP and available via a COOL URI.
For Blackpool and the Fylde College, the primary issue relating to the achievement of this aim surrounds the collection, storage, presentation and maintenance of this data. The processes employed to ensure the accuracy of course information rely heavily on a significant amount of human intervention, and as such they are inefficient and arduous. By implementing the XCRI-CAP feed, the College aims to raise the profile of its Higher Education provision by ensuring that high quality course information is maintained and made available to all interested parties.
The feed will encapsulate all of the college’s HE provision which mainly consists of Foundation Degree and Honours Top-up programmes validated by Lancaster University. With the abolition of Foundation Degree Forward, this project will support The College in maintaining the presence of its highly vocational HE provision.
The processes currently employed within the college encourage course teams to validate both full and part-time variants of their HE programmes. Financial support for part-time learners continues to strengthen and The College therefore believes that this mode of study will be a potential growth area, especially as it is not held to the same student number controls and restrictions as full-time provision. The XCRI-CAP feed will therefore allow The College to gain greater exposure of these programmes as new services are developed by course aggregators.
The Key objectives of this project are as follows:
To undertake a review of all internal systems and processes which relate to the provision of course related information, utilising the Enterprise Architecture Modelling technique by the end of March 2012.
To develop systems and processes to support the acquisition, update and quality assurance of high quality course information, supported strongly by digital content management systems by October 2012.
To create a publically accessible feed and web services which conform to the XCRI
Course Advertising Profile specification by January 2013.
