Course Data: making the most of course information - Stage 1
Universities and FE colleges (teaching over 400 HE FTEs) were invited to become involved in the new Course Data: making the best of course information Programme which will help prepare the sector for increasing demands on course data. This differs from other JISC programmes as all eligible institutions were invited to take part in Stage 1 and a majority of these will be selected to go forward into Stage 2.
A letter of commitment signed by key senior staff was needed in order to receive £10,000 of JISC funding to complete Stage 1. This will support the production of an implementation plan outlining changes required to improve course data flows within the institution and produce feeds for external agencies. Institutions can put forward these implementation plans for selection into Stage 2. Approximately 80 institutions will be selected for Stage 2 on the basis of these plans, to represent a range of states of preparedness.

Frequently asked Questions JISC Project Plan Template
Stage 1 Project Plan and Stage 2 Project Implementation Plan use the same JISC Project Template, but separate documents are needed for the 2 stages. Stage 1 Plan covers work to be carried out during Sept 7th – Nov 21st, with the £10,000 funding already received, whilst the Stage 2 Implementation Plan is for proposed work to be selected for further funding to happen between Jan 2012 - Mar 2013. Thus for 30th Oct you need to complete a Stage 1 Plan using either the JISC Project Plan Template or any other project template your University uses. If you use the JISC template, the Stage 1 Project Plan sections below only need to be completed, if they are helpful in running your project during stage 1:
1.5 Impact
3.1 Evaluation plan
3.2 Quality assurance
3.3 Dissemination plan
3.4 Exit and embedding plans
3.5 Sustainability plans
All the other sections apart from those above should be useful to you. You do not have to include a budget and a work packages appendices, unless they are useful to you for running the Stage 1 work. It is assumed projects will need to plan how the work will be completed, with some sort of outline as to how you will spend the money, but JISC do not have to see this detail.

- There is a wealth of information available on the XCRI Knowledge Base aimed at staff in non-technical, technical and strategic roles. You can find information about planning and processes and technical implementation, as well as a range of case studies from institutions that have already worked with XCRI-CAP.
- For a rapid non-technical overview of XCRI-CAP, refer to What is XCRI-CAP?
- For a quick start to planning for XCRI-CAP implementation, see the Guide to Implementation.
- JISC Project Management Guidelines. These guidelines are for institutions that have received funding for JISC Course Data Stage 1 projects and are preparing implementation plan bids for Stage 2 funding. The project plan is to define the aims and objectives, and explain how they will be achieved, what will be delivered, how the project will be managed, and how success will be measured.
JISC InfoNet infokits contain a wealth of 'self-help' material, from simple methodologies to manage projects, risks, change and processes. Infonet also run events and workshops to support our online resources and have a range of free publications available to order.
