The JISC ITT: #coursedata: Making the most of course information – xcri-cap feed use demonstrators is funding 8 projects to create innovative, engaging examples that demonstrate the use of the #coursedata xcri-cap feeds (directly, and via the JISC Aggregator API, and additional aggregators).

Read about the 29th Jan 2013 event where the demonstrators were shown to 130 Course Data Project staff at the ‘Show and Tell ‘ Course Data Programme meeting in Birmingham: http://elearning.jiscinvolve.org/wp/
More information about the event

Some demonstrators will use additional data sources such as geolocation data to provide a mash-up, some focus on using a single institutional feed.

All demonstrators will provide a clear and compelling use case and usage scenario.

The  demonstrators commissioned cover a range of approaches, eg:

  • a VLE block or module
  • an information dashboard
  • a lightweight service or interface
  • a widget for a common platform

Demonstrators will be working code and will be available under an open source licence or reusable with full documentation.

XCRI-CAP Facebook app.

A facebook app for promoting courses on institutional pages.

A facebook app for promoting courses on institutional pages.

InGenius Solutions.

This project will develop an XCRI-CAP based Facebook course search app. An institution will be able to brand the ‘white labelled’ app and install it on their Facebook page. Students will then be able to use the app to search and retrieve the institution’s course data from the JISC aggregator and view or apply for courses through Facebook.

'W4’ – a What When Where Widget for CPD

A widget displaying a calendar of CPD courses.

A widget displaying a calendar of CPD courses.

Higher Education Careers Services Unit/Graduate Prospects.

A widget that will take xcri-cap 1.2 course data feeds and display a calendar of CPD courses, searchable by:

• Keyword • Institution • Date range • Region

This web service will be hosted on Graduate Prospects’ servers and client- side JavaScript to display the calendar, and the location of the courses in Google Maps.

Advanced XCRI-CAP Search Widget (AX-S Widget)

Widget using the ASAP taxonomic search.

Widget using the ASAP taxonomic search.

APS.

The AX-S widget provides ‘best of breed’ subject search. It produces a list of courses that includes relevant related courses that might not be returned by standard search mechanisms. The widget builds on the existing ASAP demonstrator to provide a weighted subject search facility based on an extensive thesaurus of terms. The thesaurus is mapped to a number of vocabularies and keyword lists commonly used in further and higher education.

Cottage labs

This aggregator will collect course information from institutional xcri-cap feeds, and present a navigable HTML5 course comparison website, viewable on modern devices from desktops to smartphones. Presentation will also be enhanced by visualisation elements demonstrating results such as “popular courses” and so on. The work aims to address two issues arising from the unfortunate trend of commodification of academic pursuits:

- How can we present the true value of academic endeavour beyond that of it being a consumable good?

- How can we provide justification to the consumer that the quality of the delivered service is worthy of the high cost pertaining to it?

CoBoMo.

Mobile app building on previous JISC funded work.

Mobile app building on previous JISC funded work.

Oxford University.

The CoBoMo project will build upon the previous JISC-funded OxCRI, Erewhon and OxCAP projects and will enhance Mobile Oxford to harvest XCRI-CAP data from Oxford Open Data (and potentially other sources in the future) and display a searchable geo- sensitive course directory to students. A web services interface will be added to Sakai’s Student Enrolment System tool so that Mobile Oxford can exchange data with it. This will allow students to book on courses through Mobile Oxford via a dedicated mobile UI. Authentication will be handled by oAuth.

Extending XCRI-CAP with KIS data (IGSLAPS).

A tool that aggregates KIS and xcri-cap data

A tool that aggregates KIS and xcri-cap data

InGenius Solutions.

This project will join up the XCRI-CAP and KIS data sets to provide meaningful and practical outputs. Specifically, it will:

link KIS data to XCRI-CAP data as part of a ‘Course Discoverer’ service to retrieve courses by KIS data and/or course data;

link KIS data to XCRI-CAP data and produce extended XCRI-CAP feeds for use by further XCRI-CAP/KIS enabled services.

Moodle Block

A Moodle block to advertise CPD.

A Moodle block to advertise CPD.

Plymouth College of Art.

This project will develop a Moodle block which uses an institution’s XCRI-CAP feed to automatically signpost students to relevant additional learning opportunities within the institution. Signposting will be based on the current course name and relevant key words such as the “subject” field and the “type” available as mandatory and optional fields within the schema.

Skills dashboard

Business intelligence dashboard.

Business intelligence dashboard.

TrainAgain.

This project will provide a skills dashboard to help decision makers in HEIs with their planning, analysis and evaluation of training provision. The graphical interface will use data from the #coursedata aggregator.
