e-Research Roadshows

JISC is collaborating with the training team at the National e-Science Centre (NeSC) to run a series of roadshow events for researchers and others who are not currently using e-research tools or e-infrastructure services but would like to know how to get started.

EventThese events target communities who would benefit from an introduction to some of the concepts, tools and services now available for research. They are hosted by a local organiser who recognises an opportunity to develop a community. Communities might be cross-disciplinary within an institution or geographic region, or they might be geographically spread, but come from a particular discipline or some mix of the two.

Objectives

  • Support researchers who wish to explore/adopt e-research methods
  • Support researchers who wish to explore/adopt existing e-infrastructure services
  • Help IT services plan their support for this adoption by researchers

Typically, a roadshow is a half day event, consisting of about 2 hours of presentations delivered or organised by the NeSC training team and presentations by local researchers and services.

Roadshow Topics

The following topics can be covered, depending on particular needs.

What is e-Research
  • How can it support researchers
  • Who is taking advantage of the services
  • How can it advance my research – will I be able to publish more
  • How can I improve my ability to secure funding
  • What are the costs of adopting a new model of research
An overview of e-Research Infrastructure
  • Campus Grids
  • National Grid Service
  • International e-Research Infrastructure
  • The future of e-Infrastructures
Data presentation and Web 2.0 including data curation and the role of the following JISC services
  • EDINA
  • MIMAS
  • Economic And Social Science data service
  • Digital Curation Centre
Other research facilities
  • National Centre for Text Mining
  • Visualisation networks
  • Interactions with eFrameworks
Specific e-Research tools including geospatial tools, semantic tools and AHRC e-science tools
  • Virtual Research Environments

Local presentations may cover:

  • the local e-research Infrastructure
  • how this integrates with the UK picture
  • successes already achieved institutionally, in particular the experiences of researchers using e-infrastructure
