Service Usage Models
Phil Nicholls
Service Usage Models are the backbone of the Service Oriented Approach.
These models show how to achieve a goal by using a number of discrete
services whilst blueprinting future re-use. The e-Framework is collecting
together Service Usage Models for the dissemination of work and to
facilitate the emergence of best practice.
This session briefly introduced Service Usage Models, focusing on different
types of models and how they can be used. The relationship between
applications and SUMs was discussed, and how SUMs can be used to model
the use of services to perform specific functions above that of a monolithic
application. Delegates were invited to share their experiences
with modelling, with particular relevance placed on workflows, choreography
and orchestration – all very relevant to SUMs and the e-Framework.
