L20 - Sharing Language Learning Objects
The final report is available at the bottom of the page
Region: South East
Overview
L2O will test a model of collaboration between twelve HE/college partners. Each partner will provide existing learning resources to generate re-usable learning objects (RLOs). These will be created by using existing tried and tested process (e.g. style guides, templates, metadata tagging) and stored in JORUM. The RLOs will be used by the consortium partners on their own, in combination and in association with other learning resources. They will allow learners and teachers to customise the learning experience for independent learning, classroom-based learning or blended learning mode according to particular need. L2O will evaluate the feasibility of re-using learning resources in different contexts for different purposes whilst contributing to the regional post-16 agenda.
Aims and Objectives
The aim of the project is to pilot a model of regional collaborative partnerships sharing and re-using electronic learning resources across institutions and across sectors.
Objectives:
- To collect language skills tasks devised by colleagues in HE, FE, Adult Education and other sectors;
- To repurpose these tasks into Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) using templates, guidelines and checklists devised and tested by the eLanguages Project, package using RELOAD and store in the eLanguages Learning Object Repository prior to storage in JORUM.
- To assign appropriate metadata to these tasks so that they correspond to the language and skills assessed at all levels using an appropriate framework that is recognised across sectors (e.g. the National Languages Ladder being developed by the DfES as part of the national Languages Strategy);
- To engage learners in activities to develop them as both more aware and more independent learners which are key attributes for making progress in a subject area that relies on independent learning and practice.
- To develop tasks that are aimed at supporting learners outside the classroom and at all stages of their language learning, both informal and formal.
Project Methodology
The consortium consists of four HEIs in the South-East region. Each HEI will form a hub for the collection and piloting of the resources. Each hub has entered into partnership with two Further Education, Adult Education, or 16-19 providers and will oversee the collection, selection, authoring and piloting of the RLOs in these sectors. Results of the pilots will be used to inform future development of the the task template with a view to making the repository accessible across and outside the region.
Implications/ Deliverables/ Stakeholders
The project aims to produce materials which will have wide applicability to learners across the consortium institutions and will increase the pool of quality assured e-learning resources available online to each student in the region.
The student experience will be improved through flexible access to visually appealing online learning materials which will embody good pedagogic practice. The materials provided by the partners will be enhance through an iterative design and evaluation process carried out using templates and guidelines provided by the L 2 0 coordination team. The project will cascade good practice in the development and creation of online materials so that learners, who might not otherwise have access at their institution will benefit from leading edge developments in interactive materials design, audio and video capture and digital delivery. Since many of the RLOs developed will focus on language learning skills, they will be useful to students of all languages and will lead to skills and strategies which will provide a sound base for future language learning.
