e-Tools projects phase 2
There are 12 projects funded as part of e-Learning Tools Phase 2 for the Learners and Teachers strand of the Distributed eLearning programme. Each project is extending the open source software that was developed under Phase 1.

Assessment Tools in Mathematics |
Imperial College London |
This project will evaluate, pilot and develop further the Serving Mathematics tool. The following elements will be built in:
- an authoring tool for computer-aided assessment in Maths
- MathQTI specifications and XML Schema for mathematical question test items
- a rendering and assessment tool for mathematical question tests marked up in MathQTI

DELTA 2 |
University of Essex |
The DELTA service (for submitting, searching for and retrieving distributed pedagogical resources) will be enhanced by making it able to cope with multiple ontologies (e.g. subject ontologies), different resource types, and to utilise meta data harvesting to make it more efficient. |
Federated Search |

|
|
Horus-FP |
University of Manchester |
The project will develop a beta version of a Horus-based VMLE to support the Foundation Programme, and implement Horus-FP in three sites and evaluate its potential usefulness to learners. |

Interactive Logbook 2 |
University of Birmingham |
The Interactive Logbook is an open source Personal Learning Environment available both on Windows PC and mobile JAVA platforms. This project will:
- develop further plug-ins to meet the needs of diverse user groups
- extend the interoperability of the IL and test this against a number of other tools, particularly PLEs, ePDPs and ePortfolios
- pilot the IL’s use amongst these groups and where interoperability can be tested
- evaluate the usability and pedagogical value of the product

InterLoc |
London Metropolitan University |
This project will further develop, pilot test and pedagogically evaluate the AcademicTalk tool that mediates interaction as dialogue games that scaffold critical discussion and reasoned dialogue in education. |

OpenMentor 2 |
The Open University |
This project will further develop the OpenMentor tool which assists tutors through analysing and then providing reflective comments on their assessment and feedback of student assignments and coursework. |

MyWorld |
Oxford Brookes University |
Petal is a web-based information management tool, which allows users and guests the opportunity to access and share e-Portfolio records and other documents. The tool will be further developed to include a WS-based off-line tool for mobile computing devices, and a threaded discussion tool as a replacement for the OSPI-derived 'comment' function. |

ASAP 2 |
Kingston University |
This project will extend the Automatic System for the Assessment of Programming (ASAP) which has produced a pilot implementation of an open-source service-oriented programming assessment system.
The two main components to this tender are:
- Developing the Pilot Software (ASAP) to a Production Stage [Assessment Web Service + Blackboard User Agent]
- Developing Additional Tools + Services to a Pilot Stage [User Agent Tools and Assessment Manager]

Shell-Fish 2 |
Plymouth University |
Shell-fish is a tool that supports learners by providing an online facility to obtain feedback, a development plan and a record of progress related to that feedback. The system will be extended by producing an administration interface, user forum/community, community and layout and functionality suggestions obtained from pilots and user tests. |

TRICS 2 |
Manchester Metropolitan University |
This project will extend an existing open standards tool (OS-TRICS) in preparation for piloting within MMU and other institutions. The tool provides interactive cases via a web interface that allows students to investigate an organisation by: interviewing staff, viewing documents such as procedures and minutes, and by accessing informal staff communication. |

V Map 2 |
Goldsmiths College, University of London |
This project sets out to further develop the V-MAP e-Portfolio software tool, which enables the creation, uploading, updating and presentation of e‑Portfolios. |

WCKER 2 |
University of Oxford |
This project will test and advance the alpha version of the WCKER tool by running a number of pilot implementations in HE and FE institutions to evaluate the pedagogical value, effectiveness and future development requirements of the tool, and to use the results of the user trials and pedagogical evaluation to develop a beta version of the WCKER tool. The tool allows for the creation of bespoke wizards which define the overall structure or format of a suite or programme of courses. |

Peer review documentation
Each project will conducte a peer review of the system of another project to validate the quality of the tools being developed. The methodology for the peer-review and the criteria to be used is available at the foot of the page.
Pedagogic evaluation information
Each project needs to conduct user trials and pedagogic evaluation of the tool they are developing. Helen Beetham (Pedagogic Consultant for this round) has prepared the following documents:
Here are two example evaluation plans of MyWorld and Assessment Tools in Mathematics projects.
