This project will digitise and develop interactive 3D content for the Designated Metalwork collection managed by Museums Sheffield (MS) with particular relevance to those working in the STEM fields. The project will use state-of-the-art fast 3D scanning technologies developed at Sheffield Hallam University (SHU). Scanned 3D models will be exported to the open standard COLLADA format and will be visualized over the Internet using standard web browsers.

The outcomes of this pioneering project will leave a permanent digital record of the MS metalwork collection forming a key component of the city’s collaborative ambition to celebrate Sheffield’s unique place in the world history of metal-making under the banner of ‘Created and Made in Sheffield ‘– a project to enhance knowledge, culture and understanding of the city’s contemporary and historical contribution to the development of national economy and culture with a strong community focus.

The project will provide new ways of accessing object details and objects that are either too delicate or unsuitable for handling, improving collection access and public understanding.

The impacts on teaching and research in schools and tertiary education are substantial by:

1. Providing direct benefits to students and researchers in art, design, sciences and technology with freely available 3D resources
2. Stimulating changes in academic development with special reference to new degree routes in 3D technologies and Product Design at SHU with possible MS involvement
3. Raising the profile of Sheffield Hallam University as a world leader in 3D digitisation technologies
4. Providing a unique addition to MS resources with unlimited access over the Internet
5. Building on the success of previous projects: using this collection MS will use their resources to create educational tools and support for adult learners, public access within the galleries, and greater engagement with the general public and academic audiences
