The principal aim of this project is to facilitate wide access to the Eton Myers Collection through the high-resolution laser scanning of a third of the objects (chosen on the basis of fragility and display quality) and providing access to downloadable 3D models (and raw data) of the objects linked a complete catalogue database of collection. This will provide global access to the objects, and will facilitate future research and teaching. The proposed project builds upon the current establishment of the Virtual Worlds Laboratory and the creation of a physical museum for the collection in Birmingham.

Eton Myers Collection Virtual Museum

The Eton Myers Virtual Museum is now available to access. Visit the virtual museum website to explore some of these unique treasures.

The Eton Myers Collection of ancient Egyptian art is considered one of the most stunning collections of its type in the world. However, until now, access to the collection for research and teaching has been restricted. The Eton Myers Collection Virtual Museum project (EMMus) has been designed to provide unlimited access to the collection through the digitisation of a proportion of the collection. The creation of 3D models of the object through laser scanning in conjunction with the generation of a catalogue will provide the data for an Internet based Virtual Museum enabling global access to this important collection, and will provide the centre piece of the University of Birmingham’s Virtual Worlds Laboratory (VWL).

The project will also significantly reduce the need for the future transportation of these artefacts, thus ensuring their long-term conservation. The results from the project will demonstrate the value of generating a 3D digital resource and lead into the digitisation of the complete collection, in addition to the comparable digitisation of similar collections elsewhere. The resulting digital data will be curated at the University of Birmingham.
