DSpace 2.0 UK Development project

Overview

The DSpace Foundation is expanding the current set of capabilities of the DSpace software to allow institutions to enhance the value of their repository by making digital content more accessible and to move seamlessly between platforms and applications. To this aim the Foundation is interested in promoting the development of DSpace 2.0 to improve the stability, scalability and extensibility of the software. This will allow new and existing users seamless interoperability with other applications for creating, managing and collecting digital content, the ability to ingest and manage more complex digital objects, and to scale to tens of millions of items. A few key benefits resulting from the new development would be:

  • Integration and support of the Scholarly Works Application Profile, “SWAP”
  • Ability to customize and ingest metadata supporting other DC application profiles in support of more complex items such as images, video and geospatial data
  • Integration and support for “SWORD”, a web service funded by JISC to allow for a common deposit interface
  • Ease of integration with elearning platforms such as Sakai, Moodle and Blackboard
  • Backend data management and preservation for publishing systems such as Open Journal System (OJS)
  • Improved support of SOA approach through further development of LNI (Light network interface), standard protocols to move data into and out of the DSpace repository
  • Ability to customize the interface and workflow engine to better suit your institutions needs
  • Ability to handle more complex objects with ease, such as websites, multiple versions of documents etc using the FRBR model.
