Data management planning is increasingly viewed as an essential and enabling activity in support of the research process. Most UK research funders require a data management plan to be submitted with research grant applications. DMPonline is the Digital Curation Centre's widely praised tool for helping researchers prepare data management plans. The tool asks precise and clear questions to help the completion of plans according to the requirements of specific funders. The JISC Managing Research Data Programme 2011-13 has funded two projects to customise and enhance the tool to improve its interaction with institutional or disciplinary information systems and allow the better exchange of structured information and valuable metadata.
