KUSP - Kent University Shibbolized Portal
This project is part of Core Middleware Early Adopters Programme. It aims to implement a complete Shibboleth system that will provide authentication for a new student portal. The new portal will also provide a Single Sign-on (SSO) environment for our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), WebCT, and other internal systems. The KUSP project will develop the core infrastructure for Shibboleth authentication which will act as a springboard for the other partners to join.
The KUSP project is one component of a larger programme to develop a new University web environment, including a revised University website and student, researcher and staff portals.
Aims and Objectives
The KUSP project aims to create a new system of Shibboleth authentication within the University. By developing the underlying Shibboleth architecture, it will enable other partners of the multi-institutional Medway campus to adopt Shibboleth with a greatly reduced overhead. Specifically, the project will build a Shibboleth Identity Provider and Service Provider to authenticate users and allow access to a new University portal and incorporated portal systems. At this stage it is not clear whether WebCT, the University’s current VLE system will be the first Shibbolized system to be incorporated into the portal, but this decision will be taken as the project progresses. An SSO mechanism will also be implemented to allow users to seamlessly access these integrated systems without requiring multiple logins.
The specific objectives are:
- Shibboleth Identity Provider (Origin), referencing the live LDAP server
- Shibboleth Service Provider (Target)
- Shibbolized uPortal and WebCT (or other appropriate system)
- Shibbolized system (WebCT or other) integrated within uPortal
- SSO environment between Portal and Shibbolized system, provided by CAS
- Evaluation of the usability of Shibboleth for technical staff and end-users
- Evaluate use of PERMIS for authorization within Shibboleth and Portals
The KUSP project is part of a 2 year project to develop a new web environment for the University of Kent. The project will be tackled in three phases and the first two, shown in bold below, will form the KUSP project.
- Phase 1 – Shibboleth Test Environment
- Phase 2 – Single Sign On
- Phase 3 – New University Web Environment
The work will be completed by the Computing Service department and drawing heavily on expert advice from the Computing Laboratory at the University of Kent.
Implications / Deliverables / Stakeholders
The University will benefit from a stronger web presence which will help with all aspects of University business. Students will benefit from increased access to consolidated and personalised information via the portal. It will also enable us to improve the security system, streamline the business processes related to account management and require students to remember only one password. It will also make future collaborations with other institutions easier and will facilitate the sharing of resources.
