Student lifecycle mid point: Teaching, learning & assessment feedback

Overview

This project aims to enhance the sector’s knowledge of the mid-point of SLRM by carrying out a feasibility study into the expansion of an electronic assessment tracking system, to allow the recording and provision of assessment feedback for students and also provide a student centred process for reflection. It anticipates the collation of information will facilitate improvements in students’ performance and achievement, and also enable tutors to provide enhanced pastoral care.

The project will allow the thorough evaluation of students’ perspectives and preferences, and allow consideration to be given to the effective management of student relationships within UCB.

Aims and objectives

The project aims to enhance the sector’s knowledge of the mid-point of SLRM.

The objectives are to:

  • investigate the provision of a more accessible, appropriate and better-designed system of informing assessment decisions to students, facilitating teaching and learning and pastoral care,
  • explore the provision of a student centred process, enabling reflection on assessment feedback and facilitating the improvement in performance and achievement,
  • explore the collation of student feedback enabling tutors to provide enhanced pastoral care,
  • investigate the feasibility of expanding an electronic assessment tracking system, and
  • examine the enhancement of the institutional effectiveness in the use of technology to support teaching and learning.

Project methodology

The project will follow an action research methodology as it allows for a holistic approach to problem-solving allowing for several different research tools to be used as the project is conducted, rather than a single method for collecting and analysing data. These various methods will collect qualitative research data and will include: questionnaire surveys and semi-structured focus groups.

The project team will consist of a project lead, a researcher and an administrator.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

Anticipated outputs and outcomes include:

  • a detailed work-plan and timetable,
  • a detailed case study,
  • relevant contributions to JISC knowledge base in appropriate formats and forums,
  • regular progress updates via a designated web page and blog,
  • a designated web page on UCB’s website
  • interim report, and
  • final report.
