A JISC Advisory Services two-phase project to determine the support and enhancement needs of existing BCE training provision and the needs of target BCE practitioners. The project will design, pilot, co-deliver and evaluate a Training Support Package addressing (i) the use of technology and online tools for BCE, (ii) BCE leadership, advocacy and staff exchange activities between BCE practitioners and information management, libraries and IT staff, (iii) the process and system needs of collaborative (cross-institutional) service provision.

Supporting Training, CPD and Staff Exchange for BCE Practitioners

Overview

A JISC-funded user needs study of the BCE community identified 'a desire for an integrated and accessible package of training opportunities' and recommended that JISC 'co-ordinate training opportunities in order to promote an integrated training programme'.

This project will enable a more strategic approach to the BCE training support JISC Advisory Services provide, allowing gaps to be filled - both in supporting current provision outside JISC and in JISC's own provision - and national staff development strategies to be better supported.

This project will focus on supporting existing training provision rather than trying to 're-invent the wheel'. This will be achieved by working closely with key stakeholders.

Aims and objectives

The project aims to offer a complementary, integrated and coherent training support and enhancement package, the JISC BCE Training Support Package, which responds to the needs of BCE practitioners and enhances capability within institutions to better promote and support BCE activities.

The objectives are:

  • Determining the support and enhancement needs of the existing BCE training provision and the target BCE practitioners
  • Designing, in consultation with key stakeholders a JISC BCE Training Support Package
  • Piloting, co-delivering and evaluating the JISC BCE Training Support Package, in partnership with the appropriate training, accreditation and collaborative bodies

Project methodology

The project contains three phases:

  • Phase 1 (July-Oct 2008): Planning and consultation
  • Phase 2 (Nov 2008-Mar 2009): Conducting a training needs analysis using a range of qualitative and quantitative methods, and designing the Training Support Package
  • Phase 3 (Apr 2009 – Jun 2010): Delivery and evaluation of the Training Support Package

Phases 1 and 2 will be led by the Netskills project team, with input from project partners at all stages, but in particular in the design of the training needs analysis and the Training Support Package. Project partners JISC TechDis and JISC Digital Media, along with other JISC Services as appropriate, will be involved throughout Phase 3.
