Building Capacity: Leeds University
Based on the University’s Strategy Map a number of strategic priorities in research and learning & teaching have been identified. This work will allow us to identify, customise and import appropriate JISC project outcomes and products that might be beneficial to the University in addressing the priorities.
Overview
Overall the Building Capability programme aims to enhance the application of JISC outputs and outcomes in the Higher Education Sector and to create senior management led change in a number of key strategic concerns that are facing the University. In this instance the aim is to benefit from JISC projects by bringing ideas and processes into the University that will address key strategic targets in both research and learning & teaching; the Leeds project is sponsored by the respective Pro-Vice Chancellors of those areas.
Aims and objectives
-
Articulate strategic objectives that the project could contribute to.
-
Engage senior staff in the scope and possibilities of the project outcomes.
-
Establish a clear project plan and ensure project management is organised in order to maximise success of the project.
- Identify JISC projects that align with strategic priorities in L&T and R at Leeds.
-
Customise JISC products for the context at Leeds.
-
Ensure conditions for integrating and meshing the new with the existing.
-
Evaluate the project, both process and outcomes, to capture the learning for Leeds and beyond.
Project methodology
Established, clear objectives and a tight timeline will give a flexible, but guiding framework for the project. The strategic focus will be provided by a Steering Group (appointed by senior managers within the institution). In addition, this group will support, as appropriate, the translation and transition of incoming ideas. A Project Manager will oversee the day-to-day achievement of the project, and line-manage the Project Officer who will carry out the reviews of JISC projects, liaise with project champions and JISC representatives, summarise opportunities, provide reports both to the University and JISC, and drive the project to a successful conclusion.
Anticipated outputs and outcomes
-
Increased awareness of JISC outputs and services within the University, and how these outputs and services could address our strategic objectives.
-
A review of JISC projects that are mapped on to the institutional priorities and needs, and a toolkit of how his was best achieved.
-
Improved processes and procedures resulting from initiatives based on JISC outputs and services, and a toolkit of how this was best achieved.
An evaluation report that will capture the learning from the project.
