Building Capacity (Wales): University of Wales Institute Cardiff (UWIC)

The project is seeking to identify  additional tools, resources, and good practice exemplars to support implementation of two of the University’s strategic priorities i) TEL across the curriculum, and ii) uses of technology to underpin significant expansion of the University’s provision in support of workforce development.

Overview

The university’s response to two key strategy documents; “Enhancing Learning and Teaching through Technology: a Strategy for Higher Education in Wales” (HEFCW) and “For our Future” Welsh Assembly Government which seek to shape HE for meeting the 21st century challenges that the nation is confronting. Currently, the work of the GWELLA and JISC TEL-WFD projects
reflect these strategic goals. The ENHANCE project seeks to identify complementary JISC/HEA supported project outputs and good practice that will enable the university to implement a more comprehensive and more integrated solution.

Aims and objectives

Through a synthesis of good practice elsewhere with that developed via the University’s GWELLA and JISC TEL-WFD projects to identify models of technology-supported delivery, transferable within and beyond UWIC, plus  an overview of the strategic and policy issues attendant with such models.

To identify and adopt specific outputs of  JISC/ HEA  projects which, together with the outputs of the two UWIC-led projects above, provide a more complete and  coherent suite of tool, resources guidance materials and good practice exemplars that support;

  • implementation of the University’s Technology-enhanced  learning plan
  • the wider adoption of technology-supported work-integrated learning for highly-skilled professionals

Project methodology

The project team are all based in the Learning and Teaching Development Unit at UWIC. Needs analysis, screening of outputs of existing JISC/HEA projects and the liaison with key projects identified will be undertaken by Lorretta Newman-Ford, Building Capacity Project Co-ordinator. The process of building on the established links with the JISC/GWELLA communities and advice on complementarity/integration will be supported by Andrew Haldane/Richard Staniforth(JISC) and Jeff Lewis (GWELLA).Technical support will be provided by Mark Pelling, leader of the Learning Technologies team and the strategic oversight will be provided by Collen Connor, Project Director and Dean of Learning and Teaching.

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

i) Good practice synthesis; The review of case studies, models of provision and other aspects of good practice elsewhere, as documented in JISC project deliverables and HEA reports will augment and benchmark outcomes of the GWELLA, TEL-WFD and X-CERP (XCRi mini-project) projects to provide the evidence base for updating the Technology-enhanced Learning Plan(TELP) and for formulating a Technology-Supported Workforce Development Strategy (TSWFD).

ii) Specific outputs; tools, services, resources, models etc. from other JISC projects will be evaluated/adopted in order to provide a more comprehensive, integrated and coherent solution for the implementation of the above strategies.
