Building Capacity: Birkbeck University

The transition into HE project is focusing on the improvement of undergraduate retention by aiding applicants’ and enrolled students’ transition into HE. It comprises four phases: pre-application online information, advice and guidance; online material for applicant; post-application online induction and orientation activities and post-enrolment support during the crucial first term.

Overview

Birkbeck is unique. It is a world class research and teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence and London’s only specialist provider of part-timer, evening higher education. The average age of a Birkbeck student is 35.

This project was proposed in response to a new retention strategy at Birkbeck which pulls together both the teaching and learning strategy and student experience work. The retention strategy has been developed in support of the Birkbeck strategic review that responds to a funding crisis triggered by the government change of policy around Equivalent or Lower Qualifications (ELQ). Birkbeck lost 38% of its teaching funding and needs to replace the 1250 FTE student numbers lost to ELQ by 2011/12. Retention issues for Birkbeck’s student body are complex and there are few simple solutions, however, the College’s traditional mission and particular commitment to part-time, mature learners means it is well placed to develop and deliver cost-effective, focused and sustainable approaches to retention for its students. Rebuilding the student body will be achieved by both improved retention as well as increased recruitment.

Aims and objectives

  • prepare applicants for the transition into HE by
    • familiarising them with the university and, more specifically, the Birkbeck environment
    • addressing anxieties about first time or return to study
    • addressing applicants’ expectations of university life and their course; turning expectations into realistic and achievable priorities
    • conveying a sense of the (study) skills necessary to succeed in HE
    • providing low level assessments to give participants opportunities to get feedback

    Project methodology

The project is informed by the College’s Retention Strategy and is regularly discussed and monitored by a steering group which provides further strategic direction. Deliverables on the project will be achieved through working collaboratively with colleagues across Birkbeck. The project manager has identified key contacts within the College and the project planner is in the process of identifying JISC projects that will inform our online provision at Birkbeck.
