ASSESS – Assisting Students and Staff with E-Submission Systems (enabling e-feedback to students element) a collaborative cross school project supporting the pedagogical emphasis on assessment feedback through various technologies.  This pilot implementation will explore various approaches to students in supporting the feedback / feed forward process and enhance their learning experience.

Overview

In January 2011, the University of Wales Newport will see the relocation of Newport Business School and the design, film and media elements of the School of Art, Media and Design to its new £35m City Centre Campus.

Part of this strategic change process includes a University-wide innovation project to implement electronic coursework handling across three aspects, i.e., submission, marking and feedback. This project is to support the use of technology to help to develop the pedagogy involved in the feedback aspect of the larger electronic coursework handling project.

Aims and objectives

This pilot will enable us to use the feedback methods within our Moodle based MLE provision and compare these with conventional paper-based methods of feedback together with the use of alternative modern technological approaches for feedback provision such as pod/vodcasts including delivery from a variety of mechanisms.  In all cases, we will seek feedback and comparison between staff (academic, administrative and learning support) and students.  We will examine the potential of different innovative technologies to enable and/or influence pedagogic change as seen by (and compared between) the learner and the lecturer alike.

Project methodology

The Project Manager will facilitate project steering group meetings for this project in collaboration with the wider ASSESS project, which is sponsored be the University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Learning and Teaching). The overall project group will meet on a monthly basis (previously diarised) to review and monitor project progress.

The project outcomes will be reported to the University Quality Enhancement Group (QEG) and Project Sponsor along with JISC as and when required.  Each meeting will be facilitated by the Project Manger – and project documentation to be recorded based on a Prince 2 methodology (including a risk register and issue log).

Anticipated outputs and outcomes

  • A selection of feedback methods for academic staff to provide students with assessment feedback other than conventional methods
  • Staff development approaches in place to ensure all staff are trained in Moodle to implement the range of feedback methods
  • An implementation plan for the roll-out of Moodle as a tool for Electronic Coursework Handling feedback dissemination across the University.
  • A blog to provide communication to staff and student regarding project progress
  • A multi media case study for JISC dissemination
  • A full Project Post Review to inform future projects of a similar nature within University of Wales Newport and other Higher Education Institutes through JISC dissemination
