Integrating Access for Lifewide Learning - Student Experiences
JISC’s work on integrating institutional systems makes it possible for students to experience learning in a much more seamless fashion, for example signing onto university systems before they arrive for induction, developing higher level skills while still at school or college (MANSLE project) or receiving advice and guidance based on electronic records of achievement (MLEs for Lifelong Learning programme). JISC projects have also pioneered single sign-on and authentication to institutional services, making it simpler and easier for students to access what they need, when they need it. Lifewide learning is no longer an issue for a few students: the vast majority now use technology to help fit learning into their busy lives.
When we use the search engine for journals and such like, I really did think … yes, this is loads better than going to find a paper journal. The convenience of it, because all you have to do is type in what you like or what you’re looking for… It will search 7,000 journals or whatever in a minute
Student, E4L project
JISC projects are supporting work-based and life-wide learning through new approaches to curriculum design and curriculum delivery, and by researching learners’ experiences in these contexts (LEX project; PB-LXP project). Regional approaches to e-learning and e-administration have also been undertaken (Stories from the DEL Regional Pilots; Cross Institutional Approaches to Lifelong Learning) and continue to receive support from the JISC Regional Support Networks. The Enhancing Learner Progression project evaluated the potential of e-portfolios to support learners through their learning journey, particularly at key transition points. These developments are enabling traditional students to progress seamlessly from college to University to workplace, and learning pioneers to put together a portfolio of qualifications from one or more institutions, while engaged in paid work or other life commitments.
In 2007 JISC facilitated an
international online conference with Lifelong Learning as one of its key themes, which brought together many of these issues.
