Curation in the Cloud Workshop

      Date: Wednesday 7 - Thursday 8 March 2012

Venue: Hallam Conference Centre, 44 Hallam Street, W1W 6JJ

      City: London

Workshop background?

In recent years the hype around cloud computing as a route to delivering a dazzling array of services has (to quote Gartner) been 'deafening'. But much of the focus has been on using cloud infrastructure to create, process and analyse data, often in relation to business information and in the context of either the virtualisation and green ICT agendas, or for the purpose of providing flexible computational capacity for actively undertaking research work. There has been less opportunity to consider the potential of this technology to address the data curation and long-term preservation needs of researchers and research organisations. Especially in light of emerging UK government-led directives on ensuring long-term open access to publicly funded research, it is more important than ever that organisations have a clear sense of all the choices that are available to them when investing in this critical area.

Workshop aims:

The aim of this 2-day workshop is to assess the potential and practicalities of using cloud-based solutions for the curation and long-term preservation of digital materials, focusing particularly on data that originates from research or that supports research processes. What will particularly be of value is to engage stakeholders from a number of different types and scales of organisations, encompassing those that are able to rely on established and joined-up institutional infrastructures; alongside those who may have more fragmented or immature local measures in place to manage data.

Presentations, panels and breakout style sessions will provide delegates with a number of different ways of engaging with the topic during the workshop.

Workshop white paper:

To promote discussion at the workshop and to provide a focused objective and outcome for this event, a white paper will be drafted and circulated to all delegates prior to the event. Themes, topics, concerns and directions emerging from the event will be incorporated into a second draft of the white paper, the objective of which is ultimately to inform both future funding decisions on the part of infrastructure providers (e.g. JISC), and policy and strategy within institutions.

Who should attend?

Invited participants (i.e. presenters, panelists and/or delegates) will include:

active researchers

digital curation and preservation experts

representatives of funding organisations

research infrastructure and cloud solution providers

JISC CETIS Conference 2012

The Future Just Happened? Technology Innovation in Universities and Colleges

      Date: 22 - 23 February 2012

Venue: National College for School Leadership conference centre, Nottingham.
This year the conference will be co-located with the IMS quarterly meeting.

      City: Nottingham

In 2001 Michael Lewis published his seminal book “Next: The Future Just Happened” which considered the impact evolving technology would have on all aspects of our lives. Ten years on technology offers incredible opportunities for teaching and learning and how our educational institutions function. But 2012 will also be a time of unprecedented change in Higher Education in the UK. September will see students funding their own way through university, and universities operating in a new market place.

This year’s JISC CETIS conference will explore the future technological challenges and opportunities for our education system.

Keynote speakers:

The conference will include keynote presentations from:

Ian Hughes, Consulting IT Specialist and Metaverse Evangelist

Rob Abel, Chief Executive Officer of IMS

Professor Mark Stubbs, Head of Learning and Research Technologies Manchester Metropolitan University

Parallel sessions:

There will also be the following parallel discussion sessions:

QTI Codebash

Creating an Education App Store for the UK

The Learning Registry: Capturing Conversations about Learning Resources

Thwarted or Embedded: Mapping Cause and Effect

Issues around Using Data to Improve Student Retention

Emerging Reality: Making Sense New Models of Learning Organisations

Are Open Badges the Future for Recognition of Skills?

QTI Demonstration

Social Network Analysis & Data Visualisation: Past, Present and Future

Open Mic

Like all JISC CETIS Conferences, this will be a highly participative two day event, offering an opportunity to meet with colleagues involved in technical development activities.

Important information for participants

Webinars will be run using the Blackboard Collaborate software platform, provided and supported by JISC Netskills

Participants will need to have the latest version of Java installed on their PC/Laptop - check settings here: http://tinyurl.com/6bacwu4.

You will need a headset (headphones and microphone) to listen to and talk in the session. Don't use built-in microphones or speakers (built into laptops or webcams) as this creates echoing, feedback and will spoil the session for others.

Download a participant's guide to Blackboard Collaborate

In some instances you may experience firewall/proxy issues which need to be changed and they are often controlled by the local IT Administrator. If you have these issues, please read the proxy set up guide and information on firewall errors.
There is also a self-diagnosis page which gives guidance on how to solve such issues.

Conferencing in Universities and Colleges

Improving Performance, and Reducing Travel and Stress?

An event presented by the JISC-funded SusteIT project in collaboration with the EAUC Travel Coordinator’s Group, the Welsh Video Network and University of Warwick on the potential uses and benefits of conferencing for universities and colleges.

      Date: Tuesday 6 March 2012

      Time: 10:00 - 16:00

Venue: University of Warwick and via livestreaming

This event aims to:

Disseminate the latest research on conferencing usage, impacts and potential (which is considerable) from JISC-financed Green IT research projects by SusteIT (in collaboration with Janet UK) and the Welsh Video Network (WVN)

Highlight successful uses of the technology within the sector, and their benefits to individuals and organisations

Build a balanced view of conferencing use, which acknowledges that face-to-face discussion can be essential and that many conferencing applications are about supplementing and extending, rather than completely replacing it (hence our ‘physical’ event about virtual technology!)

Debate potential sector level actions to increase uptake and overcome barriers – e.g., should England and Scotland be providing similar levels of support to that funded by the Welsh Assembly through WVN?

Who should attend?

Sector policy-makers; senior managers within institutions with an interest in extending reach, improving performance or minimising business travel; and AV, IT and travel coordinators.

Opportunities for remote participation will be provided by live streaming, messaging and other means.

Information for energy efficiency improvement - dashboards, displays, reports and other measures to change user behaviour

This free workshop builds on previous 2011 events at Oxford and Manchester (see presentations from both, and a RECSO briefing paper on the former).

It is a response to rising prices, carbon regulation, HEFCE targets and other drivers for minimised energy consumption. Better information about usage patterns, and changes over time, is a key part of achieving this. This has long been understood by energy managers but hardware and software innovations are now enabling many more people to access and use energy data, and for it to be displayed in buildings. Many universities and colleges are taking advantage of these capabilities, but often in isolation. In addition, there is considerable uncertainty about how information should be provided in order to motivate changes in user behaviour.

The aims of this event are therefore to:

Share experience and learning;

Build and strengthen a network of those interested in the topics, and to

Discuss how people perceive and use energy information and the implications of this for dashboards and display design, reporting and other actions.

The event is being funded by JISC, and has been organised by three JISC Green IT projects – DELTA and Green IT for STEM at the University of Bradford and RECSO (Responsible Energy Costs, led by Forum for the Future). Both are associated with the SusteIT initiative. See here for more information. Places can be booked here.

There is no charge for the event. Knowledgeable vendors who can contribute their experience to the discussions are also welcome. As we expect the event to be very popular, cancellations after February 1st, and no shows that are not due to illness, will be charged at £50.
BRISSkit will design a national shared service brokered by JANET to host, implement and deploy biomedical research database applications that support the management and integration of tissue samples with clinical data and electronic patient records. BRISSkit are uniquely positioned to tackle this through their experience in developing the pioneering open source IT infrastructure for the Biomedical Research Informatics Centre for Cardiovascular Science in the NIHR Leicester Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (BRU). Anonymised versions of patient sensitive databases are hosted for University researchers on a LAMP stack platform implemented by the University of Leicester IT Research Computing Service in a VMware environment. The project team will work across the range of stakeholders in clinical, University and international biomedical research to deploy appropriate, secure, affordable and reliable services in this key strategic area for the UK.
