Strategic Content Alliance Workshop: Intellectual Property Rights

Facilitated by Naomi Korn Copyright Consultancy

Who should attend?

The workshops are primarily aimed at delegates from universities, archives, museums, health, public service broadcasting, schools and cultural heritage who have a professional involvement in the creation and curation of digital content. No particular technical knowledge is required.

Why are intellectual property rights so important in the creation and curation of digital content?

For public bodies, understanding the implications and roles of Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and licensing is essential when delivering digital content, collections and related digital services. This means that at an operational level, it is essential copyright and other IPRs, as well as the permissions required are managed effectively, if these public bodies are to deliver value to their organisations and their users respectively. The Internet provides a unique opportunity to deliver your organisations content, collections and services and yet, as we enter the second decade of the Internet many struggle with issues surrounding copyright and IPR. Fortunately, there is help at hand through the development of a range of tools, case studies and exemplars of “good practice”. These and other tried and tested techniques will be showcased at this event.

Topics covered will include:

The role of IPR and licensing with the context of digital content creation and curation

Introduction to the Alliance's IPR and Licensing Toolkit with group persona/scenario sessions

A watching brief of new developments and topical issues which are informing IPR debate and/or policy, including Orphan works and the Digital Economy Act updates

Case law examples of IPR legislation 'in action' and the role of risk managed approach to content creation and curation

By the end of the workshop, delegates will have:

Gained a better understanding of the role of IPR and licensing with the context of digital content creation and curation

Understood the role of procedures in their organisation for achieving best copyright practice

Discussed the Alliance's IPR and licensing resources and tested them against specific scenarios

Networked with peers and discussed mutual areas of interest

Venue Information

JISC London Office
Brettenham House South
5 Lancaster Place
London WC2E 7EN
Meeting Room 1&2, ground floor

Financing energy efficiency in university data centres and IT activities

A collaboration of the JISC-financed RECSO and Green in Silico projects

Rising prices, carbon regulation, and sector targets are all making universities and colleges pay greater attention to their IT energy consumption and carbon emissions. Many low-medium payback measures are possible, but are often blocked by a lack of funding or incentives amongst users. Several solutions are now emerging. Energy costs can be devolved to entire departments or for easily metered activities, such as data centres. Alternatively, Estates can still pay energy bills, but share a proportion of any cost increases or falls from an agreed baseline. An energy efficiency fund can also be used to finance energy efficient equipment, covering either the whole cost (as with Salix schemes), or the price premium for high performance models. However, if schemes of this kind are to work effectively it is important to address issues such as:

Raising user awareness of energy consumption and costs (e.g. through more and better use of whole life costing)

The development of new energy-related skills/posts within departments or units

Ensuring that Estates departments support data centre and other IT actions if their own financial incentive to do so has been reduced or removed, and

Achieving accurate and useful information from meters and other sources.

This workshop will explore these topics and provide an opportunity for estates, finance, and IT staff to acquire new information, and share experiences and thinking. It is a joint initiative of two JISC financed projects - Responsible Energy Costs, led by Forum for the Future and the University of Gloucestershire, and Greening Scientific Computing, led by HEEPI’s SusteIT project.

Programme
