Approaching teaching learning & assessment
Download the full report
This project addresses the need for educational development of the growing numbers of staff, teaching on higher education awards, for whom attendance on a traditional course, such as the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education, proves impractical.
Executive Summary
This project was based at University of Central Lancashire and involved the project team – a group of academic staff developers - in repurposing workshop materials for face-to-face delivery to new lecturing staff as a short professional development course for delivery on-line. During this process, the course team designed several reusable learning objects for the Jorum repository
Learning from the project centred on the:
- process of curriculum redesign when creating the new course
- process of developing the reusable learning objects
- experience of the staff participants on the e-course
Findings from the project confirmed the value of using projects involving the development of e-learning materials as a means of developing staff. Additional findings from the evaluation of the learning process for course participants contributed to the development of a model outlining the influences and processes involved when taking part in a professional development course delivered online. Finally, the experience of the project team suggests that academic staff may need to address two issues when designing reusable learning objects, they need to
- be confident of the learning value of the objects
- acquire expertise in e-learning
These two elements can be provided through the process of designing and delivering an e-learning experience prior to producing the learning objects.
