ShareGeo
The aim of the ShareGeo project was to integrate a geospatial data sharing facility within the EDINA Digimap Collections suite of services.
The objective was to take the existing repository that was developed for the GRADE (Geospatial Repository for Academic Deposit and Extraction) project and significantly enhance and improve it from both a technical and user interface point of view, incorporating the user access management capabilities of Digimap.
All the major work items identified in the work packages at the beginning of the project have been completed (apart from some metadata interoperability work). The ShareGeo repository is now available from within the Digimap Service from a redesigned Digimap Collections page. Currently access to ShareGeo is being restricted to a number of selected users. These users are people who have deposited geospatial datasets into the existing GRADE repository and/or are heavy users of the Digimap Service data supply facilities. The aim of opening it up initially to a small number of active users is to encourage these users to populate ShareGeo with a reasonable amount of data before opening it up to all Digimap users.
A list of potential enhancements has been drawn up. We will monitor usage in the coming months and assess whether EDINA has the resources to implement these enhancements. We are particularly keen to see some level of interoperability/integration between ShareGeo and Go-Geo!
Our intention is to open up ShareGeo to all Digimap Users in early January 2009 and to keep the facility running for at least a year. At that point we will review both the level of use and the level of resource required by EDINA to run this service. At that time we would welcome discussions with JISC regarding the future sustainability of ShareGeo.
