JISC

This blueprint is the result of the Loughborough University (LU) experience of developing a managed learning environment (MLE) for web based computer assisted assessment (CAA). Prior to this the CAA unit at Loughborough had established substantial experience of running windows based CAA and sought to transfer this to the web environment.

The MLE work was conducted as part of a JISC-funded project under the Building MLE in HE programme and complimented a project to take the web based CAA system forward using QuestionMark Perception software

This blueprint shares:

• Generic experience of developing an MLE for web based CAA
• Specific perception experience of managing a web based CAA service

The influence of JISC funding meant that we took a far more integrated and systems focussed approach than might have been the case without this impetus.

Aims

• Develop a generic approach to implementing the online assessment component of an MLE
• Provide supporting practical examples based on a specific application
• Map the examination process that impacts on web based CAA
• Integrate the CAA system into the relevant university information processes
• Document the process and procedure involved in embedding online assessment into university culture
• Map the roles and responsibilities of all university staff involved in the CAA MLE process
