Videoconferencing is an electronic method of communicating between two or more locations using sound and vision so as to enable simultaneous interactive communication. Videoconferences can take place over telephone data networks and can incorporate computer application sharing as well as sound and video images.
The Opportunity
Videoconferencing technology has changed; it's a lot cheaper to buy and operate than it used to be; it is much more widely available throughout colleges and universities; and it is capable of a lot more than just simple transmission of lectures. With the development and implementation of SuperJANET4, multi site videoconferencing is now a reality. Linking several sites together in a simultaneous conference is now becoming routine. Low cost desktop systems, which allow integrated videoconferencing and application sharing in different windows on the same screen, are increasing in numbers and usage. This means that videoconferencing can become an integral part of the on-line learning environment, providing a much richer learning experience than text based conferencing.
Action
Invest - Consider how videoconferencing could be used to extend teaching to off-campus locations and provide access to remote experts and activities.
