Reading College MLE interoperability in FE: Final Report

The MLE in FE partnership comprised 3 Further Education Colleges covering a wide geographical area with varied student communities and MIS systems, together with a combination of VLE and Content Vendors.

Executive Summary

  • Achieving Content interoperability is within the capabilities of a medium sized FE institution
  • Content interoperability does not fully exist with the existing crop of VLE's
  • Current content standard designs (technical and pedagogic) are not being sufficiently developed or implemented
  • Practical interoperability is only achievable through tangible real time co-operation between Vendors and individual institutions. Systems are not currently plug and play
  • A degree of MIS VLE interoperability can be achieved through the use of an intermediate hub
  • Devolving the operation of a college VLE beyond the IT / MIS teams may be impractical in the near to medium term
  • Definition of a VLE. A content access tool is not a VLE
  • The FE institutions need ownership of the toolkits that will enable them to produce their own content.
