This document presents the results of a technology review, carried out for the JTAP project on the 3D Virtual Graduate School (3DVGS) Project; a computer-based, active and distance learning project to develop 3D interfaces to information systems at the University of Manchester.
Introduction
The findings are freely available to the UK academic community.
The aim of this project is to develop tools to assist the development of 3D interfaces to information systems culminating in an exemplar academic application. Well designed 3D interfaces will facilitate the organisation of complex information systems, allowing the user to exploit the human eye’s ability to identify a target object in a collection of 3D objects.
As existing technology will form the cornerstone of the toolkit, the review assessed current technology and its suitability for use in the 3DVGS toolkit project and the report covers client/server, viewing and development software and focused on technology up to the 21 February 1997.
