Steve Bailey of Jisc infoNet talks about managing the business of education
Are we now on the cusp of a new era in IT and user behaviour, which could fundamentally change the way in which information is created, used and managed?
All institutions now have staff writing their own blogs and making use of wikis, but this is only the beginning. Users are beginning to shun the institution’s email system in favour of Instant Messenger or Skype and there are even reports of staff preferring to use social software such as Facebook to communicate with students, rather than the university’s Virtual Learning Environment.
Looking further ahead institutions need to start addressing the implications of staff relying on externally provided applications and services, beginning with a definition of the technical and social boundaries of what is considered acceptable use. In this podcast, Philip Pothen speaks to Steve Bailey from Jisc infoNet on how new technologies are beginning to change e-administration and the management of institutions.
