Launch of Jisc Plagiarism Advisory Service

25 September 2002

The Jisc is pleased to announce a new service aimed at supporting universities and colleges in their endeavors to prevent and detect plagiarism. The service, based at Northumbria University, will seek to promote good practice in this area by providing online access to a variety of information aimed at senior managers, academic staff and students. This will include guidance on assignments, policies, procedures, and student learning in the area of plagiarism. The service will also provide workshops and training.

In addition to advice on plagiarism the service will provide online access to a central detection facility, located in the UK and supported by iParadigms the leading US supplier of plagiarism detection products. Although it was clear that electronic detection will not solve the problem of plagiarism, it will assist staff in identifying plagiarism, thus allowing them to concentrate on the issue of prevention. Provision of a national facility will also allow the checking of student work for collusion within and between institutions, something not currently available.

Both services will be fully supported by Jisc in the first two years and therefore available to UK FE and HE institutions at no cost.
