Exploring the frontiers of e-learning at ALT-C

13 September 2005

The 2005 ALT-C (Association for Learning Technology Conference), whose theme was 'Exploring the Frontiers of e-Learning', concluded last week. Paul Bailey, Jisc e-Learning Programme Director, here shares his views on the highlights of a highly successful conference. He writes:

Jisc had excellent representation throughout the programme from its projects, all delivering high quality presentations on new developments and initiatives in e-learning. Subjects covered by Jisc-funded projects included the development and use of e-learning tools such as assessment tools, e-portfolios and learning design tools; innovative practice with mobile and wireless technology; the use of managed learning environments in a cross-institutional context, and sharing resources within subject communities.  The exhibition was particularly interesting this year for the support shown by commercial  companies for open source development and commercial solutions for e-Portfolio systems, for example, which are key areas of activity for Jisc development programmes.

A new publication ‘Innovative Practice with e-Learning’ from the e-Learning and Innovation strand of the Jisc e-Learning Programme was launched, and there was a great deal of excitement around the Jisc stand for the launch. Delegates who attended sessions run by the Jisc Team were extremely enthusiastic about the practical advice and guidance that this new resource gives on using mobile and wireless technology in real life educational contexts. You can download the publication (PDF version).

For Jisc, this year’s programme showed the importance of collaboration. Representatives from Jisc infoNet, Professor Tony Toole from Coleg Sir Gar, shared a session, and although their views contrasted it was a great opportunity for delegates to have these differing and yet complementary views represented.  Jisc and Becta’s joint session on e-assessment appeared to strike a chord with delegates who appreciated the need for Jisc and BECTA to collaborate across sectors, from schools to higher education.

Having attended ALT for many years, it was great to see so many new ideas represented and discussed. We look forward to being involved once again in 2006. See further details of the conference.
