TechWatch publishes report on advanced display technologies

27 September 2005

The latest TechWatch report on advanced display technologies is a comprehensive document, designed to take readers from an introduction to the key issues to a glimpse of what the future has to offer the F&HE community.

The report has two main sections: the first half looks at how the human visual system (HVS) processes information and the relative success with which cathode ray tube and flat panel display technologies are able to match the HVS. It also looks at how and why 'flatness' has come to dictate current technology developments and where this may take us in the future.

The second section builds on this, covering emerging technologies such as emissive displays, flexible displays and e-paper, high-definition TV and video, 3D systems, immersive and collaborative display environments, and near-to-eye systems (i.e. augmented reality spectacles). As with other TechWatch reports, there is an indicative timeline for development and discussion of some of the market drivers that will have an impact on which technologies come to the fore.

The report also teases out some of the issues that will be of relevance to the F&HE community. It looks at how high expectations over the quality of content, driven by the consumer experience, will impact on the design of teaching and learning materials, and even the physical spaces where learning takes place. It also looks at how large-scale visualisation environments, providing very high resolution, enable researchers working at the cutting edge of science to envisage huge datasets – something that is beyond the capabilities of current display technologies.

The full report is available from the TechWatch website.
