Landmark new initiative offers museums major savings on key resources
Museums across England can, for the first time, benefit from nationally negotiated agreements for a range of selected and high quality online subscription services as a result of a new initiative funded by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA).
“We are delighted to be working with the MLA and the LMLAG on this important new initiative. A wide range of invaluable online resources are within the reach of museum budgets, in many cases for the first time.”The MLA has funded JISC Collections to negotiate licence agreements direct with publishers for selected online resources on behalf of the London Museum Librarians and Archivist Group (LMLAG).
Museums can choose to subscribe to one or more of a range of prestigious online resources including Art Abstracts, Art Full Text, Art Index Retrospective, Early English Books Online, Grove Art Online, JSTOR, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, the Oxford English Dictionary Online, Oxford Reference Online and the Times Digital Archive.
Generous licensing terms have been negotiated which mean that an unlimited number of users at subscribing museums are able to use the resources at the same time on a 24x7 basis from wherever they are in the world. Additionally museums can offer on-site access to the resources to researchers and other visitors.
Lorraine Estelle, Chief Executive Officer of JISC Collections said, “We are delighted to be working with the MLA and the LMLAG on this important new initiative. The considerable discounts that have been achieved through negotiation at a national level mean that a wide range of invaluable online resources are within the reach of museum budgets, in many cases for the first time.”
Representatives from the museum community selected the resources on the basis of academic quality, relevance, value for money and the willingness of the participating publishers to meet needs of participating museums and archives.
