Exploring the way forward for Green ICT

A JISC-funded project established to investigate how ICT within universities and colleges can be made more sustainable has organised a workshop that will explore issues surrounding energy efficient configuration, cooling and power supply in data centres.

This SusteIT event - held at Cardiff University - will include a site tour which aims to profile a good practice example of the sustainable solutions that are in use at the university, while the workshop will give practitioners an opportunity to network, both within IT and between IT and Estate Departments, who have an essential collaborative role to play if effective Green ICT solutions are to be achieved. Register for the Sustainable IT workshop

This Sustainable IT workshop is to be held on June 19 at the University of Cardiff and is one in a series of six workshops that will be running over the next few months. Peter James, Professor of Environmental Management, and Director, SusteIT will provide an overview of energy efficient data centres, while Dr. Hugh Beedie, Chief Technology Officer, University of Cardiff will look at of the energy efficient design of Cardiff’s facilities.

This event will investigate how institutions can not only limit the carbon emissions directly produced by data centres, but also the rocketing costs of cooling and the increasingly expensive equipment and infrastructure that are required by non sustainable solutions.

The workshop aims to advise how these issues can be overcome and will particularly discuss enhanced efficiency and design of computers and applications, while encouraging awareness of effective collaboration between Estates, IT departments and suppliers, to achieve these sustainable solutions.
