'Greening' ICT: open call issued today

JISC TechWatch today announced an open call for prospective authors and peer reviewers interested in contributing to a report on the technologies involved in ‘greening’ ICT. The report is being commissioned in response to the growing concern over climate change, most notably the recently published Stern Review of the Economics of Climate Change.

JISC recognises that there is a growing demand for action on climate change and that there is widespread concern from the public, and within education itself, over the 'there is widespread concern from the public, and within education itself, over the energy consumption of ICT...'energy consumption of ICT and the environmental impact of the development, manufacture and disposal of many information technology products used in universities and colleges.

It is envisaged that the JISC TechWatch report will examine the environmental issues in the context of ICT and review the state of the art in terms of technological ‘solutions’ such as power saving, data centre management and environmentally sustainable construction of equipment. However, the report should also move beyond this to provide a radically different view of what 'Green ICT' might mean within the H&FE context as well as informed speculation on the future direction of 'greener' technologies over a five to ten year time horizon.

JISC TechWatch is looking for potential authors and peer reviewers who have a strong background and interest in greener ICT technologies and their implementation. This is an excellent opportunity for an author or team of authors to make their mark in this important area, as this is a report for which there is considerable strategic demand within JISC and HEFCE. It is likely that there will be a high level of interest in its conclusions both within the education community and the wider public sector.

Interested parties are asked, in the first instance, to review the open call which is published on the JISC TechWatch website at: 'Greening' ICT
