Intute 'discovers the best of the web'
Nine new ‘best of the Web’ subject booklets have been
published by Intute. Providing a selection of some of the most useful
Internet resources for students, lecturers and researchers in a variety of
subjects, they also point to the free Internet search and training services
offered by Intute.
Electronic versions of each booklet are freely available
for everyone to download and copy from the Intute website. Staff may also
order ‘the “Internet Resources for History”
booklet is absolutely wonderful and is exactly what I
need'printed copies (while stocks last) from the Intute Helpdesk.
Intute provides Internet training services in a variety
of formats, including seminars and events, online tutorials, re-usable
presentations and worksheets. The printed booklets and targeted mail shots
are designed to reach staff who might not yet be familiar with the new
Intute service or the key academic Internet resources in their
subject.
The booklets can be a useful reference for those
undertaking research, or for those responsible for creating course
materials, reading or resource lists for students.
Feedback from those already using the booklets has been
extremely positive, with one researcher at the Liverpool School of Tropical
Medicine saying: ‘I am responsible for teaching literature review skills to
Masters students, and have distributed electronic copies of your booklet –
“Internet Resource for Health and Medicine” – to my students. I have
received a lot of positive feedback about their usefulness.’
A subject librarian at the University of Glasgow said
that ‘the “Internet Resources for History” booklet is absolutely wonderful
and is exactly what I need as a Subject Librarian, as I can
disseminate the information to both staff and students,’ while a director
of research at the University of Edinburgh said: ‘It has been most helpful
at many levels, an almost obligatory resource for most postgrads, strongly
encouraged for the honours students and for those who are picking up an
interest in History and historical resources at levels 1 and 2. I have also
found it useful in my own research.’
The nine new titles bring the total number of Intute
subject booklets to 16.To see which subjects are
