EMOL becomes Film and Sound Online and undergoes some important changes

Multimedia service relaunched as Film and Sound Online

Following a review of EMOL (Education Media OnLine), the free online multimedia service has of today become Film & Sound Online.

With a new, updated interface, Film and Sound Online also has important new functionality. The key improvement is that users of Film & Sound Online are now able to browse by subject, as all the service content is classified through the UNESCO thesaurus.

Other new features include a 'Showcase', which gives a brief, visual demonstration of the range of content available in the service, and a "View or create learning materials" page, which enables users both to view case studies and reviews and to offer to create learning materials.

In the coming academic year EDINA will also explore other ways of improving Film & Sound Online, such as a forum, where Film & Sound Online users can exchange ideas and information about their experience of the service and its content.

Jeremy Atkinson, Chair of JISC's Online Film and Sound Working Group, commented: 'Film and Sound Online provides some very high quality film, video and sound material, which can be used freely, either in full or as segments, in learning, teaching and research. Recent changes to the service make it much easier for staff and students to find, access and use the material they need, providing real opportunities for HE and FE users to enhance their learning and teaching materials'.

There is no need for existing EMOL subscribers to take any action now, as Film & Sound Online is available under the current EMOL licensing terms, ie free of charge to licensed institutions until 31 July 2007. See details about the sub-licence and how to subscribe. A free guide giving details of the content of Film and Sound Online is also available.
