Pioneering work in the analysis of staff training needs has been a feature of the work of the Scottish Regional Support Centres since they became established in 2000. Two surveys of the further education sector (ETNA, 2001 and 2003) and one of higher education (HETNA, 2005) have provided funders, national organisations in the field, as well as the education institutions themselves with vital information about the needs of staff in Scotland.

Now it’s the turn of further education once again and the Scottish RSCs have launched a new survey designed to help the RSCs attune their support provision to sectoral need, to help shape the strategy of the Scottish Funding Council and to support colleges in setting their local development targets. But most importantly, the survey is designed to allow college staff to have their say directly. What are their training needs? And what sort of arrangements could meet those needs?

Sarah Price is Manager of RSC Scotland North and East. She says:

"The ETNA Survey is fully supported by the Scottish Funding Council. Letters are going out from them to all college principals requesting that the exercise be fully advertised within their own college. We’ll be analysing the results of ETNA over the summer, with a view to publishing the report in the autumn."
