A schedule giving guidance to colleges on the retention of records has been published

JISC issues guidance on retention of FE records

The Freedom of Information Act (2000) and the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 require that public authorities make proper provision for the care and maintenance of the records they create during the course of their business. An essential part of this requirement is knowing how long records need to be kept.

A schedule has been produced by a collaborative project undertaken by JISC, JISC infoNet and members of the Further Education community which provides guidance on the periods of time for which particular records must be retained by institutions.

The aim was to produce a schedule that was as comprehensive as possible, but which could be searched easily. However, detailed information will change across time as legislation and regulation are changed. For this reason it was decided to mount the output as a searchable database accessible from the JISC infoNet website, which can in future be amended and extended as necessary.

This new resource adopts the same functional approach as its HE predecessor, making it applicable to the full range of FE institutions. Enhancements to this version include improved layout, cross references to the HE Records Retention Schedule and an internal search engine.

The Records Retention in Further Education Resource is available from: records retention schedule.
