A new ADS service

Archaeology service links to Google Maps

The Archaeology Data Service (ADS/AHDS Archaeology) has announced a new trial service within its online search catalogue ArchSearch, writes William Kilbride.

Using links to the recently launched 'Google Maps' service, it presents location maps and limited aerial photography within ArchSearch records. This means archaeological sites and other places of historical or architectural importance can be seen in their immediate landscape context and can be displayed at local, regional and global scales.

This new feature is presented as a trial because the service would like comments. To use the service, simply go to any record in ArchSearch (link) and switch on the maps in the dialog box on the top right. The maps will stay with for the rest of your session.

Here are some examples with high resolution imagery, or features that stand out on the ground:

Maiden Castle, Dorset
Anti-tank defences on the beach at Gullane, East Lothian
Inchmurrin Castle, Loch Lomond
Jodrell Bank Radio Telescope
