Service announcement: JiscPAS reaffirms its commitment to UK FE and HE

15 August 2005

Due to recent communications containing erroneous and misleading information received from a third party by a number of UK colleges and universities, the following statement has been issued by Jisc's Plagiarism Advisory Service.

Contrary to recent reports, the Jisc Plagiarism Advisory Service has not, and will not 'dissolve' and is still providing advice and guidance as well as delivering the Turnitin UK detection software. It is worth noting that in fact the Jisc Plagiarism Advisory Service has expanded this year to include the provision of:

  • DVD based guidance for academic and students
  • Online presentations relating to advice and guidance about how to address plagiarism
  • Regional Seminars
  • Plagiarism Audit Materials
  • The second UK Plagiarism Conference.

Turnitin UK is the name of the detection software provided by the Jisc Plagiarism Advisory Service. It is not tied to any one Virtual Learning Environment. It was fully funded for three years by Jisc to enable all UK Jisc institutions to have access to leading plagiarism detection software.

Due to its popularity and massive rate of adoption within the sector the service now has the biggest and most complete database available of UK papers - having been populated over the space of the last three years.

The Turnitin UK detection software was selected by Jisc after rigorous testing of all major detection systems. The solution offered was independently reviewed and considered the best in its class. Jisc are therefore recommending its use to the community.

The Turnitin UK detection solution is a premium product; one which we are very committed to and in our view represents the best available in the market place. This solution and trial access continues to be subsidised by the Jisc.

A list of plagiarism detection products is available on the Jisc website at www.jiscpas.ac.uk . There are now many choices in this area and is it important given the sensitivity of the information that an institution can be confident that their selection is reputable, secure, compliant with UK legislation for Freedom of Information and Data Protection and has an appropriately populated database for comparisons. We can assure all of our customers that Turnitin UK meets all of these criteria and is very good value for money.

Please feel free to contact us about any issue regarding plagiarism.
