New Jisc Inform magazine: Green ICT special
The latest Jisc Inform has just been published (Issue 24, Spring 2009). Brimming with news and information from Jisc, its services and Regional Support Centres (RSC), it will keep you fully up to date with our activities across UK further and higher education in recent months.
Green ICT, or the sustainable use of technology within education, is the focus of this issue, with a Jisc report and briefing paper on the subject now available online. From energy-saving computer programmes to considering the procurement, lifetime energy consumption and disposal implications when planning any new ICT purchases, this report shows how ICT can be used to further an institution’s environmental strategies.
Professor Sir Tim O’Shea (pictured right) is introduced as the new chair of Jisc, in an interview and podcast with Philip Pothen. Sir Tim is committed to supporting Jisc’s diverse programmes of work, stating: ‘What Jisc has to do, in the IT domain, are things that can’t be done individually.’
The economic benefits of Open Access publishing are discussed in an interview with Australia-based researcher Professor John Houghton. Co-author of a new report on alternative scholarly publishing models, Houghton explains where immediate savings can be made.
Understanding students’ needs and expectations is paramount if UK higher education is to fulfil and exceed them. Jisc’s Student Experiences of Technology campaign is designed to investigate, understand and raise awareness of the issues, to help institutions deliver the best student experience possible. Read more about the Jisc-funded Committee, campaign and Guardian supplement in a student-focused special.
Judy Redfearn discusses how traditional subjects are receiving an ‘e-overhaul’ in the light of innovative new technologies. The Archaetools, e-Dance and e-Curator projects all demonstrate how classic subjects are successfully keeping up with the e-revolution.
