Ariadne highlights web accessibility
The new issue of Ariadne, highlighting the question of web accessibility by disabled people, is now available. Among the items included in the current issue is an article by Lawrie Phipps, Neil Witt and Brian Kelly. They question the universal applicability of the Web Accessibility Initiative's guidelines, and suggest a framework which provides a broader context for their use in e-learning. Another article looks at a Web accessibility audit by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council (MLA) – ‘the largest and most comprehensive Web accessibility audit undertaken’ - while an article by Kevin Carey looks at accessibility across a range of technologies, including broadcasting and telecommunications.
Other articles include an introduction by Michael Fraser to virtual research environments (VREs), which provide collaborative environments in which researchers can work together across institutions and in some cases across national borders. Michael also writes about three Jisc-funded VRE projects in which the University of Oxford is participating. Coverage of recent conferences includes a report on the annual Jisc Conference held in the Spring.
