What turns an innovation project into a successful service?
Demand for a resource from users can often make or break the sustainability of a project. JISC Inform reviews feedback from students and lecturers using the popular Hairdressing Training resource, which is soon to be rolled out in Eastern Europe.

Teaching someone to cut and style hair without having a real person to practice on can be a challenge. But video, audio and online tasks are all part of the new language of college lecturing. The interactive resource Hairdressing Training, which started life as a JISC-funded project, is now one of Mimas’ most popular services, giving lecturers in hairdressing exemplary step-by-step guidance videos, self-evaluation tests, worksheets and guides to help them teach an expanding collection of hairdressing styles and techniques.
In the UK the service is also mapped to the NVQ Hairdressing curriculum. Hairdressing trainers can now find the resources they need to help students at every stage on Hairdressing Training.
But now the project is heading east – to make the online resources more widely available and improve skills and training opportunities for hairdressers in Eastern Europe. New partners in Bulgaria, Romania and Slovakia see these resources as essential for trainee hairdressers and teachers and want to develop e-learning, open and distance learning in their respective countries –so the European Union’s Lifelong Learning Programme is supporting the roll-out of the resource more widely.
