Virtual Research Environments: Into the future - JISC conference 2008

Virtual Research Environment (VRE) development is now in a phase of relative maturity, and focussed in large part on encouraging take-up amongst researchers.  However the direction for further development could potentially go several ways, and this session will explore the options.

There are several challenges in the VRE field that feed in to this discussion, but this session will focus on the following:

  • Should the emphasis be institutional embedding or disciplinary support?
  • Are standard portal technologies or web 2.0 the best way forward in this?
  • In other words, how does the VRE programme achieve the maximum impact for the research community?

A panel of 4 experts will then discuss their views on the fundamental elements of these challenges and a discussion will then be opened up to the floor through a wrap-up Q&A session.

Objectives

  • Raise the awareness of the progress of the VRE programme and plans for the future
  • Demonstrate the challenges that the VRE programme has raised
  • Promote the discussion on the various directions that further VRE development could take
  • Help show the considerations in setting the agenda for JISC's role in further VRE development

  • Mathew Dovey JISC - Session Chair
  • David de Roure, myExperiment, Southampton University
  • Chris Awre, eReSS, University of Hull
