This ITT aims to develop Digipedia into a pilot demonstrator in 2010 and fully established from 2011. This will require clear and concise workflows by which grant funders can contribute documentation ad hoc. Main areas of work covered by this ITT will be:

  • Scope, develop and deploy the Digipedia pilot demonstrator based on wiki technology
  • Develop a 'fit-for-purpose' service model based on wiki technology.

Research Expertise Analysis

The scope of the project is the communication and promotion of research expertise from within UK HEIs to external users of that expertise, expertise being understood in terms of both human and intellectual capital combined rather than soley in terms of research outputs. This will include promotion of the researchers themselves as well as promotion of their research. The principle objective is to identify ways of working which are already successful or which have the potential to improve access to HEI research expertise for external parties such as SMEs or community organisations.

Several institutions have online directories of expertise which are valuable resources and interfaces for external parties. However the extent to which these reflect other institutional strategies is unclear, as is the effectiveness of current services in meeting the needs of external parties

Clarifying the Purpose and Benefit of Preserving Software

Recent JISC-funded work has concluded that effective software preservation is largely bound up with the software development process itself and the capture of preservation- related information throughout the software lifecycle. A demonstrator tool (SPEQS) is availble for use in the Eclipse development environment and with the software version management system Subversion. The object of this work is to enable further testing of the demonstrator and to extend the methodology to other developer environments. The overarching aim of this work is to disseminate best-practice preservation approaches to the software development community.

Promoting Researcher Engagement with Web Archives

This is an exemplar project that will support and describe the process of carrying out research in collaboration with the Internet Archive. There are compelling reasons for researchers to engage with the great wealth of content held in web archives, and proven ways for the archive to add value to that material, yet engagement with this form of research has, to date, been limited. The output of this work will be a description of the processes of collaboration and recommendations for enabling additional future research to occur, both with the Internet Archive and other web activities.
