Access and Re-use Semantics for Research Papers

A small scoping study to explore the increasingly common scenarios in scholarly communication that require knowledge of the level of access and re-use permitted to a scholarly output.  The study will be initiated and managed under the auspices of the JISC PALS Group.  The study will be set up in partnership with others from the PALS Group and publisher representatives, members of the UK OA Implementation Group, the British Library and others as appropriate given the small scale of the work.  The aims of the scoping study will be to:

  • Develop a list of use cases/scenarios in which clear labelling of the level of permitted access to a scholarly output (at article level) is, or would be, beneficial.
  • Validate this list among stakeholders to ensure that it is, as a first approximation, complete and accurate.
  • Develop an analysis from these use cases/scenarios, which outlines the scope of the metadata required, for what purposes, by whom, the authoritative source of that metadata and any constraints in its expression.

Release:  February 2012

Project Period: May to September 2012
