JISC Grant Funding 8/11: JISC ‘Course Data: Making the most of Course Information’ Capital Programme - Call for Letters of Commitment
The Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) and the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) invite English Universities and FE colleges (teaching over 400 HE FTEs) to become involved in a new programme of work which will help prepare the sector for increasing demands on course data. This differs from other JISC programmes as all eligible institutions are invited to take part in Stage 1 and a majority of these will be selected to go forward into Stage 2. A letter of commitment signed by key senior staff is needed in order to receive £10,000 of JISC funding to complete Stage 1. This will support the production of an implementation plan outlining changes required to improve course data flows within the institution and produce feeds for external agencies. Institutions can then put forward these implementation plans for selection into Stage 2. Approximately 80 institutions will be selected for Stage 2 on the basis of these plans, to represent a range of states of preparedness.

Funding is available for projects starting from Monday 12 September 2011 for an initial period of approximately three months. Projects selected to go forward into Stage 2 will continue for an additional 12 to 15 months. All projects must be complete by 29 March 2013.
This programme approach is designed to ensure a high number of engaged institutions, which is vital to get the critical mass needed to effectively demonstrate to the sector the huge potential of organising and presenting course information in a standardised way.
JISC held an online community briefing event where those interested were given information about the background to the call, its objectives and the funding process.

Letters of Commitment may be submitted by Higher Education (HE) Institutions funded by HEFCE. FE institutions in England that teach HE to more than 400 FTEs are also eligible to bid providing involvement in this programme supports the HE in FE agenda. HE and FE institutions in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales are not eligible to bid.
Stage 1 funding of £10,000 is available for all eligible institutions which submit a Letter of Commitment which provides evidence of support from Senior Managers responsible for Teaching and Learning, Marketing, Management Information Systems/IT and the institutional course web sites.
