JISC wishes to commission a study to outline the issues surrounding metadata creation and to look at other possible strategies, tools and mechanisms for automatic metadata generation and exposure.

The aims and objectives of the study are to:

  • assess how realistic metadata creation is in terms of the evolving information environment
  • identify automatic metadata generation/extraction tools and what the potential uses are for these within the context of resource discovery for learning and research within the post-sixteen education sector
  • highlight issues and challenges surrounding the use of these technologies and metadata generation
  • make recommendations for potential work within the JISC Information Environment in order to help address the associated issues

Funding of up to £40,000 (inclusive of VAT and related travel and subsistence) is available for the study.

The expected start date for the project is the 20 March 2006. This study should take place over a maximum period of five months.
