Introduction

The Archives Hub service allows users, ranging from the novice to the experienced researcher, online access to descriptions of archival collections in the UK higher and further education sectors.  The service forms part of JISC's Information Environment and the emerging national archives network.

This circular invites proposals from institutions or consortia to develop and contribute content to the Archives Hub service.

Funding is available for descriptions of archive collections and manuscripts for which institutions have curatorial responsibility and which are made available to researchers.
Funding for these descriptions is available in the 2003-04 AY and 2004-05 AY.

Who is this Circular of interest to?

This Circular will be of interest to FE and HE institutions wishing to create descriptions of their archival collections and make these descriptions available through a national service.

Call for content

All content incorporated into the Archives Hub will be made freely available on-line to the UK HE and FE community and beyond for the foreseeable future.  The descriptions remain the property of the contributing institutions.

Proposals in one of the following areas (or a combination of these) will be considered:
a. Institutions with catalogues of archive and manuscript collections that require updating and editing in order to produce descriptions of the required standard;
b. Institutions that have yet to create collection-level descriptions for collections;
c. Institutions that have already contributed records, but have further collections for inclusion;
d. Institutions that have content available to the necessary standard, which will require minimal editing for inclusion in the Archives Hub.

Funding available

A total of £150,000 is available for this call in both the 2003-04 AY and 2004-05 AY.  Funding will be available up to a maximum of £30,000 per institution.  However since funding is limited, it is expected that where circumstances permit, grants of less than this will be requested.
