Science is becoming more ICT-intensive. Like many activities it is making ever-greater use of desktop and mobile devices and the Internet. In addition, it has more specialised needs such as high performance computing and ICT-intensive equipment in laboratories. Patterns of ICT use are also changing, with suggestions that cloud computing could have a major impact on the way that computing-intensive science is carried out. This workshop will examine a number of these issues, and highlight examples of good practice in responding to them. It has been organised in conjunction with a meeting of the EU-funded e-Infranet project, which has a mission of fostering world-class ICT infrastructures to support European science (see http://e-infranet.eu). The project is currently determining what Green IT initiatives it will engage with to support this mission, and the workshop will therefore provide valuable inputs to this discussion. (There is a proposal pro forma at http://bit.ly/lR0MkY for submission of project ideas that might be relevant to e-Infranet, and an opportunity for some people doing this to attend the follow-on e-Infranet meeting). The European connection will also make it an interesting opportunity for UK to network with colleagues from other countries.

Greening Science Computing: An International Workshop in Bristol

Morning workshop at Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol

Science is becoming more ICT-intensive. Like many activities it is making ever-greater use of desktop and mobile devices and the Internet. Date: 26 May 2011

Time: 9.30 - 12.30

Venue: Graduate School of Education, University of Bristol, Berkeley Square, Bristol, BS8 1JA

City: Bristol

This workshop will examine a number of these issues, and highlight examples of good practice in responding to them. It has been organised in conjunction with a meeting of the EU-funded e-Infranet project, which has a mission of fostering world-class ICT infrastructures to support European science. The project is currently determining what Green IT initiatives it will engage with to support this mission, and the workshop will therefore provide valuable inputs to this discussion. (See proposal pro forma for submission of project ideas that might be relevant to e-Infranet, and an opportunity for some people doing this to attend the follow-on e-Infranet meeting). The European connection will also make it an interesting opportunity for UK attendees to hear about interesting, science-relevant, Green IT initiatives in Finland and the Netherlands, and to network with colleagues from other countries.
